SIGN OUR PETITION TO GET THE MAYOR TO CLEAN UP CROYDON
Croydon has been declared the fly-tipping capital of the UK . It’s a shocking and unhygienic disgrace to see our streets left like this.
The problem is the current Mayor has put NO enforcement in place to catch the criminals that do this. Our money is used to clear up their dumping, but no one is there to catch them, punish them or make sure they do it again!
This is why I launched this petition with Cllr Chris Herman and the Croydon Labour group - to urge our current Mayor to adopt 5 solutions that could clean up our streets:
-
Employ two enforcement officers to allow the Council to take enforcement action against fly-tipping vandals.
-
Introduce ‘Mega Skip Days’ to areas where there is low car ownership and high rates of fly-tipping.
-
Allow private companies to take enforcement action against fly-tippers. These companies would be allowed to keep the fines they raise to pay for their costs e.g. CCTV, with no expense to the taxpayer.
-
Publicly name and shame anyone who is caught for fly-tipping, to act as a deterrent.
-
Design out’ fly-tipping in hot-spots, for example using trees and benches to block off areas of repeat offence. Fly-tipping is dangerous, unhygienic, and a criminal act that should not go unpunished.
Please sign this petition to urge the Mayor to take action!
Don’t ever let anyone tell you campaigning like this doesn’t make a difference. Last year the Mayor told us he couldn’t clean up the dumpside on Purley Way near the war memorial because it was on private land. My ward colleague Ellily Ponnuthurai and I campaigned for a year to get it sorted, and now it is. The dumping ground has been cleared and new shops and businesses are set to open on site soon.

GET CROYDON OPEN FOR BUSINESS:
RE-OPEN WANDLE PARK CAFÉ!
How can the Mayor say Croydon is ‘open for business’ when he can’t even open a park café?
We’ve been fighting alongside residents to get the café at Wandle Park reopened for years now. To raise awareness about this, we supported residents with a POP UP CAFÉ in December, just outside the closed café which included hot drinks, cakes, wreath making and general merriment.
Incidentally, after all the pressure from residents and ourselves, the Mayor has said that the Café has got a new vendor that should be starting in the spring… we have however, been here before and been let down, so let’s believe it when we see it! We also really wanted smaller, local, community owned businesses to be able to bid for the tender, but the Mayor decided to let only a select few bid for this café. Sigh.
The next step will be to take a petition to Full Council. Watch this space.

Standing Up
for Women’s Safety
As part of the 16 Days of Activism for Violence Against Women and Girls, many Croydon Labour members joined the march through the town centre.
Labour councillors also organised a fantastic open mic night, and have repeatedly called for more action in this fight in the Council chamber, from calling on the Mayor to hire more Independent Domestic Violence Advocates to giving greater priority in the housing register to those fleeing domestic abuse.
Do message us to get involved. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic or sexist abuse of any kind, we have links to organisations who can help. Just email us any time.
